Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch is a handheld electronic game released by Nintendo in 1982. It’s part of the larger Game & Watch series, which featured many iconic titles and played a significant role in the history of handheld gaming.

Gameplay:

In this game, you play as Donkey Kong Jr., the son of Donkey Kong, and your objective is to rescue your father, Donkey Kong, who has been captured by Mario (yes, the same Mario from the “Super Mario” series, though here he acts as the antagonist).

To achieve this, you need to climb vines, avoid dangerous creatures (like birds and alligators), and unlock the cage holding Donkey Kong. There are four key vines on the right side of the screen, each holding one of the keys that must be unlocked.

Hardware:

The Game & Watch handheld itself was a simple LCD game system designed by Gunpei Yokoi, and it had very basic controls compared to modern handhelds. The wide screen version of Donkey Kong Jr. had a larger display than earlier models.

Legacy and Impact:

• This game was part of the growing Donkey Kong franchise, which helped establish Nintendo’s dominance in the video game industry.
• The Game & Watch series as a whole was a precursor to more sophisticated handheld gaming systems like the Game Boy.
• Donkey Kong Jr. remains one of the earlier examples of the puzzle-platforming genre and is notable for its reversed roles—Mario as the villain and Donkey Kong’s offspring as the hero.

The Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong Jr. is highly sought after by collectors today due to its vintage appeal and the lasting legacy of the Game & Watch series.
