The entire theme of this mission is that you use stone and iron to buy your food to feed your population, as you won't get any food until you clear about most of the map and the grasslands are in the middle.

Wall off your southern approach with 2 towers, 1 mangonel and one ballista (other players do it with 3 towers). I did this in order to save the last tower to place it on the other 2 approaches on the other side - because attacks will be coming from there as well, I think 3 towers is overkill to pin an enemy AI down.

My strategy:
Use early game gold to get yourself crossbow men and shields. Make 2 defensive towers to your south. Mount the shields onto the towers, they act as meat shields for ranged enemy attacks and prolong your crossbow men's life.

Wall off the other 2 approaches to buy you more time. When you hear "The keep is enclosed", it means you have properly sealed your castle.

So I slot in about 20 crossbow men and 18 archers in the southern approach, and it is enough to keep the enemy pinned - meaning they won't be able to attack back, not even with their mangonels because they keep getting killed.

Then another 15-20 crossbow men on the other defensive tower to hold off any assault from there.

Lastly - I did not build a tower early on one of the approaches - going towards the stone. Instead I went for 5x fire ballista and shields and let the wall break down, so as they charge they melt to your fire ballista. Expand towards the east and clear the enemies there, then make your way clockwise, clearing enemy kings along the way.
