The most annoying mission in the Crusader trail. I've had a number of fair restarts until I understood the gist of this mission.

Relocate your stockpile at the back of your castle so that its in a safer spot. You have an enemy castle to your immediate south west - and they will be building towers with archers and brazier to harass you.

Strategy

The key is to note the safe distance to build between you and your castle. Remember - enemies placing towers and archers with brazier early on in the game can really mull you down - so either avoid their line of fire or place a lot of crossbow men and do it very early. The former is the more practical choice here because you need to defend against waves of enemy attacks. Place your defensive towers where you aren't getting attacked by the enemy and place them early - because the enemy will attack in waves and the intensity will increase over time. You also want to place defensive towers to your west - near the river, because Richard will spam the most troops at you.

The gist of this mission is to have a lot of defensive towers and keep them alive and keep accumulating them until you have enough to hold out comfortably. Place ballista on them so that they can target catapults from a long distance. Place also crossbowmen and archers on them (archers can deal with fire starters much more effectively with their high rate of fire). Place also shields on top so you improve the overall armor of all of the units on top.

You want to mine stone and iron early and try to make the most stone quarries and iron mines that you can, because you will be stuck defending for a long time till you can build your army - by selling excess stone and iron or your excess gear from your armory.

Tip: To easily kill catapults, press space to change the elevation view to ground, drag select on your ballista with archers, select the balista and then target the catapult. You have to keep doing this early on so that you prevent your buildings and towers from getting destroyed.

Your safe spot is to the north on the cliffs, so build your hovels and temples there.

Once you have a sizeable army, level the enemy king closest to you, then make your way clockwise. Save Richard for last (his castle is easy to siege, but its best to do it when you already have tons of troops towards the end).
