Two astronauts were strapped into their seats on the flight deck of Columbia, a brand-new spaceship known as the space shuttle, early on April 12, 1981.

The commander, John Young, had already made four space flights, including a 1972 moonwalk. The pilot, Bob Crippen, was a Navy test pilot who would later fly three shuttle flights under his leadership. However, nothing a guy had ever done or would do would be quite like this.
