On November 9, 1959, Boeing was granted the design contract for the Dyna-Soar, and on June 19, 1962, the Dyna-Soar was renamed the X-20.

The Dyna-Soar, a 35.5-foot (10.8-meter) piloted reusable space vehicle, had a strongly swept delta 20.4-foot (62-meter-span) wing and a graphite and zirconia composite nose cover, as well as three retractable struts for landing. Beginning in November 1964, eleven manned flights were to be launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. The first orbital flight of Dyna-Soar was tentatively slated for early 1965.

The X-20 has progressed to the mockup stage. Its development had cost $410 million, and a team of astronauts was preparing to fly it.
