The Zero-Length Launch System was a novel way for launching jet fighters almost vertically utilising solid-fuel rocket engines to rapidly achieve speed and altitude. Once expended, the single-use rocket motors would vanish. These experiments took place in the 1950s, during the formative years of the Cold War.

This system's operational application would have used mobile launch platforms to scatter and hide aircraft in wooded regions, considerably lowering their vulnerability at fixed locations. It was expected that the Soviet Union would attack all known military airfields with small tactical nuclear weapons at the start of any war, destroying any potential of an airborne response. This technique allows for the firing of pre-positioned fighter and assault aircraft from concealed locations.
