Setting
The Outer Worlds is set in an alternate timeline, with the point of divergence beginning when United States President William McKinley was not assassinated by an anarchist in 1901. As a result, Theodore Roosevelt never succeeded McKinley as President and large business trusts were never broken up, leading to a hyper-corporate, class centric society dominated by the power of mega-corporations and robber barons, which by the distant future, have begun to colonize space. The game takes place in the year 2355 in the Halcyon System.
Introduction Story
The Stranger, also known as "the unknown variable", is a passenger aboard the colony ship Hope, which is bound for the distant Halcyon system, wholly owned and operated by corporations. During its journey, the ship's skip drive malfunctions and it is forced to continue using its sublight engines, extending the trip from ten years to sixty. Since Halcyon was colonized through other means, the Hope is unexpectedly found adrift with its colonists unable to be revived and the Halcyon Holdings Corporate Board decided to abandon the colonists. The Hope is moved into orbit over the ice planet Typhon and its existence covered up.
Thirty-five years later, the colony is in fact on the verge of complete collapse. Despite the assurances of the Board, life in the colony is far from perfect. The main problem being slow and subtle starvation of the entire population due to Earth food being too low in nutrients.

The Stranger is awoken from cryogenic stasis by Phineas Vernon Welles. Welles informs them that they have been woken up using a special concoction of his own creation; however, the rest of the crew remains in stasis. Attempting to awaken the crew at this point would likely result them suffering explosive cell death.
With his ship damaged and few options remaining Welles enlists the stranger's help setting things right in Halcyon, but first, transportation is needed.

ADA (Autonomous Digital Astrogator) is an advanced AI aboard the Unreliable. She controls the navigation and communications systems of the ship. As ADA was programmed to recognize only Alex Hawthorne as the legal owner of the Unreliable, the Stranger has no choice but to allow her to identify them as "Captain Alex Hawthorne" in order to circumvent the restriction. She is able to adapt and learn from the ship's operators to be able to better anticipate their needs.

Primals are large gorilla-like creatures native to Terra 2, and can also be found on abandoned mining outposts on the asteroid of Scylla. Primals are covered in extremely thick skin, which also appears to have bioluminescent qualities.
They are also incredibly strong, and possess the ability to dig underground, only to jump out in order to attack unwitting enemies. Some Primal variants are known to have limited psychokinetic abilities, owing by their power to infuse rocks with N-Rays that can damage foes and prey. Primal brains are known to be biologically similar to the brains of Earth primates.
