Setting
The Outer Worlds is set in an alternate timeline, with the point of divergence beginning when United States President William McKinley was not assassinated by an anarchist in 1901. As a result, Theodore Roosevelt never succeeded McKinley as President and large business trusts were never broken up, leading to a hyper-corporate, class centric society dominated by the power of mega-corporations and robber barons, which by the distant future, have begun to colonize space. The game takes place in the year 2355 in the Halcyon System.
Introduction Story
The Stranger, also known as "the unknown variable", is a passenger aboard the colony ship Hope, which is bound for the distant Halcyon system, wholly owned and operated by corporations. During its journey, the ship's skip drive malfunctions and it is forced to continue using its sublight engines, extending the trip from ten years to sixty. Since Halcyon was colonized through other means, the Hope is unexpectedly found adrift with its colonists unable to be revived and the Halcyon Holdings Corporate Board decided to abandon the colonists. The Hope is moved into orbit over the ice planet Typhon and its existence covered up.
Thirty-five years later, the colony is in fact on the verge of complete collapse. Despite the assurances of the Board, life in the colony is far from perfect. The main problem being slow and subtle starvation of the entire population due to Earth food being too low in nutrients.

Ludwig is paranoid and believes that the automechanicals which are seen all over Halcyon have been programmed to eliminate the human race and replace them. He has been requisitioning backup for the inevitable war on the mechanicals for months and is looking for people to recruit to be a part of his Resistance, as he believes that he is the only thing standing between Edgewater and total annihilation. His concerns have gone largely unheeded by Edgewater's leadership; Reed Tobson has even implemented an automatic rule which sets all trouble tickets lodged by Ludwig with the Maintenance Division to low priority.
Ludwig is also greatly suspicious of Parvati, due to her tendency to humanize automechanicals with names when she performs maintenance on them.

This malfunctioning automechanical can initially be found roaming the Edgewater junkyard. Its navigation module has been dislodged, affecting its ability to successfully search for a repair bay. Its broken navigation system has led it to determine that the junkyard is a "Spacer's Choice Designated Mechanical Repair Bay".
If it is repaired by Parvati, she will name it Jeremy after the character in the aetherwave serial, True Romantic Tales of the Space Guard, due the mechanical's helmet's resemblance to its namesake.
