Last part of Al-an's body? Check. Way too many shadow leviathans trying to eat our face? Check. Ending of the game? You got it.

So, since this is probably the last time I'll stream this unless they release a LOT of new content, here's my review of it if you care:

I got my money's worth out of the game since I bought it in Early Access for 20 dollars. Steam says I have 76.8 hours in the game, and we all know that most of that is in my first two playthroughs, and definitely not in the last 4 streams here. The game's core loop is the same as the first subnautica and it's fun. Base building is enjoyable in the same way that wasting away the hours building in minecraft is.

The logs (of which I didn't spend much time in this playthrough since the other 2 covered all of that for me) are interesting and expand the lore. But I don't feel like we ever got a ton of closure on some of the events. I had to go reading in the steam discussion threads to find out that it wasn't Sam that detonated a bomb in the omega base, it was Maida. Maybe I knew that before and just forgot, I don't know. But following clues about how our sister become a terrorist and paid the price for it is enjoyable, but also doesn't really connect to the REAL main quest, which is getting Alan out of your head. I was a little surprised when we just ditched the world. I wonder if AL-AN would have said anything different if I hadn't cured the monster in the ice cave? I kinda doubt it. These parts feel a little weird in retrospective after sleeping on it. I think the story was supposed to be of Robin finding the answers, accepting them and finishing the work Sam started, then with nothing left to tie her down, off she goes on a big adventure. But if you think about it... Robin still has her family back home doesn't she? And she has Sam's pet to take care of? Did all those things get taken care of because she came to this planet and we're just not told? Must be. Also, the Altera staff not being around bothered me a little bit, where did they go? Why did they leave? The half eaten lunch, the bases not totally covered in snow, it doesn't look like they've been gone for THAT long so where'd they end up? Did Maida hunt them down and kill them? Give me the logs for that! That'd make for an interesting sub plot, have us helping Maida out by shutting down the satelitte and then we start finding altera bodies or something. Give us choices to help either Altera or Maida, that'd be real neat.

Anyway, putting aside the "what could have been" notions, what we did have was fun. Even though it's really really really shallow. Compared to the original game, the max depth of 1100 is paltry. There's not as many biomes it feels, and while neat, none really capture the horror or dread of descending down into the deep black sections that the first game had. Everything's too bright. Nothing is scary once you have a sea truck with perimeter defense or prawn suit. But maybe that's just my own growth from playing the games... still. I had fun DESPITE the smaller biome. But it still feels like a knock since it would have been cooler to go find the heated sections that produced the red beryl in the first place, ya know?

So, the game is 30 dollars right now not on sale. Is it worth the price? If you do three playthroughs sure. But if you're going to just do the one, and spend time exploring, collecting, and not rushing between things... probably but honestly. I think you should wait for a sale. It's an expansion to the original game truthfully, and so 20 dollars feels more at home.
