Sudan's Army Retakes Republican Palace From RSF After Fierce Battle
Sudan’s army has recaptured the presidential palace in Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after intense fighting. Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah announced the victory, stating that the army destroyed enemy fighters and seized large amounts of weapons. Soldiers shared footage from inside the palace, though its authenticity was not verified. The RSF had taken over the palace in April 2023 when war erupted, forcing the government to flee. The palace, a key symbol of Sudanese sovereignty, served as an RSF stronghold, housing elite fighters and ammunition. The army’s recent advances have significantly weakened the RSF, with some of its fighters now scattered in central Khartoum. The nearly two-year conflict has caused immense devastation, killing tens of thousands and displacing over 12 million people. As the army pushes forward, Sudan faces one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with severe hunger and widespread displacement worsening daily.
