I wouldn't exactly call this a hidden gem, more of a cult classic. I've definitely heard of this, and its supposedly superior sequel and fun previous entries. I like hudson soft back when they were alive so I wanted to play it because of that. That and cuz caveman games seem to always have a great charm. Bonk, Tomba, Joe & Mac etc.. The game has a variety of gameplay mechanics that all feel very natural and great animations that help telegraph to you how said mechanics work like the charge jump showing the caveman move his little but back and forth. The extreme focus on momentum is pretty fun and unique, usually momentum is non-existent or dogshit in platformers so it's always a treat to play a good one. Decent soundtrack, bosses are a smidge too easy, I wish the life system was a little more generous. The hunger mechanic is kinda interesting but feels mostly pointless with the abundance of food around, it helps with trying to get more points at the end of levels for one ups but 50k points isnt the smallest feat so overall maybe one or two more continues? The only other drag on the game is some trollish moments, and that the level design is fairly plain. Aside from two or three levels involving some verticality, they all feel pretty identical with different settings. Hills, stretch of road, jump over hole, jump on blocks, repeat. I know that sounds like every platformer but in this it's all laid out literally like that and rarely strays from it. 7/10

Super Adventure Island (高橋名人の大冒険島, Takahashi Meijin no Daibōken Jima, "Master Takahashi's Great Adventure Island") is a 1992 platform game by Hudson Soft released for the Super NES. It was the first Adventure Island game released for the SNES and came out between the releases of the NES games Adventure Island II and Adventure Island 3.
