Super Bomberman R: Story Mode Prologue & Planet Technopolis 1-4
23Here's the main reason why I played through all 5 of the first Super Bomberman game to begin with. Not the absolute best comeback for the franchise, I admit, but I'm really impressed with how much care and updates Konami gave to this game after absorbing Hudson Soft into themselves.
This seems to be a start of a new Bomberman continuity, with at least 7 more colors besides the White Bomber himself to get stronger focus.
I have already beaten this game, so some things shown here will be slightly different from how they would look from a completely new save file of this game. The game is loose enough with this to still let me keep my money gems and see all of the cutscenes over again.

This game's story is a gloried remake of Super Bomberman 3's story, along with some bits from Super 2's story. The evil professor Buggler has reappeared and gave back life to the Five Dastardly Bombers. With Magnet Bomber, Golem Bomber, Phantom Bomber, Karaoke Bomber, and their leader, Plasma Bomber, on Buggler's side, he will have the entire universe in his grasp.
Back on Planet Bomber, we are introduced to the Bomberman Bros.: A team of Bomberman siblings with their own colors, distinctive personalities, and even voices!:
- White: The oldest brother and proud leader of the team. May seem more like a dad at times with getting his younger siblings to follow orders, but loves them all very much.
- Black: The so-called "perfect guy" with a cool demeanor. He's move over a narcissist, and is shy around girls, though.
- Blue: The brainy sleepyhead. 99% of the time, he's useless, but his remaining 1% makes up for it with his incredibly-high intelligence.
- Red: The fiery hotheaded brawler. He'll take on any fight no-holds barred! Seems to actually enjoy training almost like White does.
- Yellow: The Pollyanna. A total ray of sunshine and happiness as his color shows. Nothing will break his jolly mood!
- Green: The youngest sibling, and cute as a button! He even sometimes uses his cuteness to trick his older siblings into giving him things.
- Pink: The assertive girl. Loves animals and her sister Aqua the most. She's literally the Heart of the team if her antenna is concerned.
- Aqua: The sensitive girl. Loves her sister Pink, and is actually girlier than her, but she hates violence (don't get her mad, though...).
White was having some trouble with all of his siblings, because they were all too busy with themselves to join him for training.
Suddenly, Buggler appeared from a transmission to announce his first step towards intergalactic conquest. He and his Buggler Army have taken over the five planets of the Starry Sky Solar System. He gives the Bombermen a sadistic choice: Either serve under him, or try to defeat his Five Dastardly Bombers!
This was troubling for White, but at the same time, it finally gave him and his siblings something to do. Something they were... trained to do.
So after a bit of a struggle, all 8 Bombermen used their ship to head off into a new adventure to save the universe!

The Bomberman Bros. first went to Planet Technopolis. It has already been taken over by the Buggler Army and turned into one of their bases.
To get to center of this problem, White suggested that the whole team uses stealth to sneak into the base as quietly as possible. Aqua prefers this as well, because she doesn't want to get into a fight.
But then this goes right out of the window once Red makes a bombastic first impression and blasts through the whole base! So much for stealth and non-violence...

Getting through this game is a less arcade-like experience compared to the first 5 Super games. For some examples:
- If you lose a life, you keep all of the powerups you had at that point. This also includes taking a break from Story Mode.
- Each world is set up like its own run. Go through 10 levels to beat that world and move on to the next. If you lose all of your lives, you can spend money gems to continue right where you died with a new set of lives, or you can give up and start the world over again with your stats reset.
- You can also stop at a level to change your character. Powerup stats are kept the same as they were before you started that very level, though any lives you lost during it will still hold true.
- You will be ranked with a certain number of stars at the end of the world depending on how many money gems you get from the powerups and lives you have.

Getting through this game's Story Mode works the same as it did in Super 4 & 5: Eliminate all of the enemies, then take a magic exit that appears.
However, from time to time, Super R has you complete different tasks before an exit can appear. For example, in 1-3, you have to press two blue switches for the exit to appear. There will be more tasks than just this later on.
