Independent watch brand AVI-8 is teaming up with Capcom for their first-ever watch collaboration starring a retro-inspired timepiece: the AV-4104 Flyboy Capcom 1942™ Automatic Limited Edition.

Drawing inspiration from 1942, Capcom’s iconic ‘80s vertically scrolling shooter, the video game’s retro aesthetics are translated onto the watch face. Arriving in a 41mm stainless steel case, the timepiece houses a textured, multi-layered, and matte-finished dial that’s embedded with 8-bit aircraft motifs. The date window also features a pixelated typeface reminiscent of the number displays as seen on the screen of the game. Another feature serving as a faithful tribute to the original arcade game is the seconds hand — it takes on the form of the “Super Ace” aircraft that the player pilots, while the pointed end is doused in a rainbow gradient to emulate the bullets. All aforementioned elements are luminously coated to evoke a vibrant and nostalgic scene in the dark.

Running on a Japanese Seiko TMI NH35 Automatic movement, the collaborative reference is also capable of withstanding up to 5 ATM underwater. Available in two colorways, each watch is uniquely numbered, accompanied by authenticity certification alongside a set of custom prints featuring vintage comic-style illustrations by Nache Ramos. In Addition to the steel metal bracelet, an additional two-tone nylon strap is also offered.

in 1984, Capcom released 1942, a vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up game that would revolutionize the gaming industry and become a classic in military aviation gaming history. In this blog, we explore the legacy of 1942 and its impact on the gaming industry.

The Legacy of 1942: How Capcom Changed Military Aviation Gaming Forever

1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II and puts the player in the role of a fighter pilot of the United States Navy. The player's objective is to defeat enemy aircraft and sink enemy ships while avoiding enemy fire and obstacles.

The game was developed by Capcom, a Japanese video game company that had been founded only a few years earlier. It was released initially as an arcade game and later ported to various gaming platforms, including the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the Commodore 64.

The Legacy of 1942
1942 was a significant milestone in gaming history for several reasons. It introduced several new gameplay mechanics and design elements that would become standard in the shoot 'em up genre.

One of the most notable innovations in 1942 was the "loop" maneuver, which allowed the player's aircraft to perform a vertical loop to avoid enemy fire. This mechanic would become a staple in the shoot 'em up genre and has been used in countless games since.

The game's graphics and sound design were also groundbreaking at the time, featuring detailed and realistic depictions of aircraft and sound effects that added to the immersive gameplay experience.

1942's success spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including 1943: The Battle of Midway and 19XX: The War Against Destiny. These games expanded on the original's mechanics and design and helped to establish Capcom as a leading video game company.
