Super Mario - Peach, Sprixie Princesses & Bowser
14Princess Peach (casually Peach, usually known as Princess Toadstool outside of Japan prior to Yoshi's Safari, and later Super Mario 64) is a main character in the Mario franchise and the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach first appeared in Super Mario Bros. and was created by Shigeru Miyamoto to be the damsel-in-distress throughout most Mario games. She resides in her castle along with many Toads, who act as her loyal servants. Her kingdom is often attacked by the Koopa Troop, a group led by Bowser. She is the love interest of Mario.
Peach has an affinity for the color pink, which accents her gentle personality and kind temperament. Peach's gentle nature and role as the damsel in distress are often represented with her heart abilities and crown emblem. Peach's initial design was said to represent her stubborn yet cute appearance.
Since her debut, Peach has appeared in installments related to the Mario game series for over three decades, even appearing in more games than any other female character in video game history. Peach is occasionally a supporting character in mainstream games and almost always playable in spin-off installments. Her most prominent appearance to date is as the heroine of Super Princess Peach and the most recent mainstream game where she appears as a playable character rather than a damsel-in-distress is Super Mario 3D World.
The Sprixie Princesses are a group of seven characters from Super Mario 3D World. They act as the rulers of the Sprixie Kingdom and the Sprixies, a race of fairies who play a major role in the story. The British English release of Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack refers to the green Sprixie Princess as the sole Sprixie Princess and refers to the others as her followers. Due to Yoshiaki Koizumi deciding to make Princess Peach a playable character as opposed to having her reprise her usual damsel-in-distress role as how Koichi Hayashida and Kenta Motokura initially intended it to be, the Sprixie Princesses became the damsels in distress getting captured by Bowser in lieu of Peach.
Bowser was created by Shigeru Miyamoto as the villain of Super Mario Bros. In concept art, he tentatively had the name 「ボス クリーパー」 (Bosu Kurīpā, Boss Creeper), based on Shellcreeper. Miyamoto stated that they considered naming him either kuppa (국밥), yukke (육회), or bibinba (비빔밥), which are all Korean dishes as they are known in Japanese. In the end, "Kuppa" was chosen. Miyamoto mistakenly thought kuppa was grilled meat and that made it sound powerful and cool, but later learned that it was a rice soup. For the later North American release of the game, which also introduced the anglicized spelling Koopa, the character was named "Bowser".
The earliest known design for what would become Bowser depicted him as resembling an upright Koopa Troopa with spines on his back, and fangs. During the development of Super Mario Bros., Miyamoto considered asking a manga artist or illustrator to do the art for the game. However, time was running short, so he drew the game's original box art himself. This artwork included a depiction of Bowser that is significantly different than later designs, the most obvious anomalies being his gray-blue skin and lack of horns. For the character's appearance, Miyamoto drew inspiration from an anime film adaptation of the Chinese novel Journey to the West, renamed Alakazam the Great during the film's American localization. He liked the film's main antagonist Gyū-Maō (lit. "Ox Demon King," King Gruesome in the dub), so he loosely based Bowser on an ox as a homage.
Yoichi Kotabe, an animation artist, later joined Nintendo and was asked to do new illustrations for the Mario series. His only reference was the package illustration for Super Mario Bros., so Kotabe asked Miyamoto many questions on how to draw the characters. However, designing Bowser caused problems, since Miyamoto had not drawn him often. He brought up that he liked the Ox King from the film, and this was how he imagined Bowser, but Kotabe thought Bowser's original design looked like a hippo and Nintendo designer Takashi Tezuka pointed out that Bowser should be a turtle. Through their discussions, Bowser's appearance gradually came together. Since he was in the same turtle family as the Koopa Troopas, they partly based Bowser's new appearance on them.
