There are many games that I played growing up but one of my favorite games to return to is Super Punchout!! For the SNES. This is the second game in the Punch-Out!! series, the first one being released on the original NES.

The game is simple, fight your way through several boxers to become the champion. You go through four circuits and each circuit has four fighters, totaling 16 boxers. There is also a time attack mode which lets you practice against any of the 16 enemy fights and understand their patterns.

In Super Punch-Out!! You are able to dodge in multiple directions, left right, duck as well as blocking body blows and jabs. What is new about this game from the previous game is the addition of a charging system. Landing multiple blows to an enemy will charge a meter and once charged, you can do devastating blows on your enemy. However, once you are hit, you will lose the charge and will have to build it up again.

Super Punch-Out!! Has also done away with multiple rounds and instead has one round. You have to KO the enemy being having them stay down for 10 seconds or knock them down 3 times. There is also a time limit of 3 minutes. Once the time runs out, you lose, so you need to be quick.

Each fighter has its own unique characteristic, such as Gabby Jay being an old man who has only ever won one match, Bob Charlie, a Bob Marley look-alike, and Mad Bull, a giant man who rushes at a to KO you in one punch.

One of the reasons why I love this game so much is that it feels like a boss gauntlet. There are no areas to explore, puzzles to solve, just fight the next after the next boss until you beat the game. You have to learn enemy patterns to beat the game which shares similarities to other games I enjoy such as any game in the soul’s series.

Another big appeal to this game is speed running the game. With the time attack mode, you are able to perfect your fights and try to achieve the fastest KOs for each fight. The fastest time someone has been able to beat the game is 2 minutes and 28 seconds.

Something that I wish the souls game would do is add a gauntlet mode when you beat the game so you can just fight the bosses over and over again without having to go through the entire game. Having a time attack to go with it would icing on the cake.

Super-Punchout!! Is a great sequel to Punch-Out!! and is a precursor to my enjoyment of games that involves learning enemy patterns and learning from my mistakes. With unique boxers and amazing artwork, this is game that everyone should check out, especially if you enjoyed the first game.
