In the game, players control Superman to fight villains like Bizarro, Metallo, Mongul, and Riot, with Bizarro also being playable in minigames. The game features voice acting from the movie's cast, including Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey. The console and DS versions differ significantly in gameplay.
Players explore an 80-square-mile, open-world Metropolis, using Superman’s full range of powers. However, these powers must be used carefully to avoid city damage. Superman is invincible, but the game can end if Metropolis suffers too much damage. Powers are upgradeable, and stamina can be replenished by flying into the atmosphere to absorb sunlight.
Gameplay encourages creative use of powers, like using freeze breath or repositioning fire trucks to stop fires. Unlockables include alternate costumes and a "Bizarro Rampage" mode, accessible via a DVD cheat code.
The game was delayed to improve quality and eventually released in November 2006 alongside the film’s DVD.
