In the summer of 2021, military veterans around the country watched in horror as Afghanistan fell back under Taliban control.

John Carson, a former British soldier, volunteered to offer support to Afghan families moving into his local area.

To his surprise, the council put him in touch with an Afghan who he had served alongside on the frontline 10 years earlier.
