I didn't play SWAT 4 when it was originally released in 2005 but I really liked Sierra's SWAT 3, which essentially rebooted the series as a first-person tactical shooter roughly similar to what Ubisoft and Red Storm did with the Rainbow Six franchise. While I appreciate the classic Tom Clancy games, SWAT 3 was always more fun for me as it never had any of the boring planning sections and was instead based around some very common-sensical "ask first, shoot later" mechanics and a neat system for ordering your squads around during the missions. The randomized enemy placements are also nice and really add tension to the gameplay, as you can play the same mission over and over again without ever knowing exactly when and where the bad guys will show up. As always with so-called tactical shooters, SWAT has a tendency to get maddeningly frustrating with some truly torturous trial-and-error as a result of the lack of save functionality during the potentially lengthy and unpredictable missions.

SWAT 4 was apparently developed by Irrational Games, Ken Levine's studio responsible for games like System Shock 2 and BioShock, and has a nice Unreal-based graphics engine which certainly looks a whole lot better than the game that preceeded it. Other than that and some minor improvements its basically SWAT 3 with new missions, which is good enough for me.
