Sword of the Sea
Title: Sword of the Sea
Developer & Publisher: Giant Squid
Director: Matt Nava (art director of Journey)
Composer: Austin Wintory
Release Date: August 19, 2025 (PC & PlayStation 5)
You step into the role of the Wraith, a silent, spectral figure reborn in a desolate world. Armed with the Hoversword, a surreal fusion of snowboard, skateboard, and hoverboard, you navigate shifting dunes and frozen landscapes to restore a forgotten ocean.
As you collect Ocean Seeds, the barren desert transforms into vibrant, aquatic environments full of life and new traversal options. The more water you bring back, the richer the world becomes—and the faster you can surf across it.
The movement is smooth and meditative. You carve through sand dunes, glide over glaciers, and even catch air with tricks like flips, spins, and wall-rides.
The game is breathtaking. Its surreal landscapes—flowing dunes, halfpipes, and ancient ruins—feel alive, with light, color, and music blending seamlessly to create an emotionally resonant experience.
In keeping with Giant Squid’s signature style, Sword of the Sea delivers its story without dialogue. Instead, it relies on visual storytelling and Austin Wintory’s evocative score to bring emotional depth. The focus is less on puzzles or narrative arcs, and more on atmosphere and the spiritual act of movement in harmony with nature.
Critics and players alike have praised the game’s aesthetics and flow. PC Gamer described it as a “short but spectacular surfing game,” while GamesRadar highlighted its visual poetry and smooth traversal, noting that its chapter structure and operatic score elevate the emotional impact.
