Interestingly, Syphon Filter 3 was the first game of the series I played. I was 10 years old in 2002 and spotted the interesting looking cover art at the local Blockbuster video, I have been a big fan and have recommended it to others ever since. I loved this game back then; when you're a kid you don't really care about how long a tedious objective takes to complete nor do you pick up on the little negativities that make a game mediocre to a more perceptive mind. You're shooting stuff, there's explosions, I can follow the shallow plot and that makes me feel good about my burgeoning young mind, THIS IS COOL! Now, as an adult I finally agree what contemporary reviewers thought: Syphon Filter 3 is like the redheaded stepchild of the original trilogy on PSX. If SF 1 and 2 are the feature presentations of a DVD, then this is the bonus featurette, it really should have been called Syphon Filter Chronicles or something. It runs on the same engine, has the same graphics, and same voices I grew to love, but it really falls short on story and cohesiveness compared to the other two. The first two Syphon Filter games didn't rely on jacking up health for enemies or pointless and tedious mazes to keep the player occupied. The first two games (especially SF2) kept you glued to the screen with cool set piece levels and story developments (C130 Crash Site, Washington Park, Jason Chance's betrayal) none of that can really be found here. This game reminds me of that episode of Frasier where they show old clips from previous seasons and patch them into an episode with a retrospective format ("Remember when we ______, and this happened?"). Another thing that I thought wasn't up to par was the music. When I play the first two games (sorry to sound like a broken record), I get pumped up when I hear the rainy Washington Park theme or the badass boss theme from SF2. Nothing here really sticks out. The music can be described as muddy and adequate but there are some standouts to me. I like the Jungle theme and the Afghanistan Village at night theme. Apparently the guy who did the awesome music before wasn't brought on for this game. The voice acting is good as with the others in the original trilogy. Alot of people ragged on the voice acting but I think its great in its own unique way. The voice acting in the original trilogy has a real natural sound to it and really brings life to the characters. Even though Gabe is occasionally spouting one liners and the characters aren't speaking in an overly dramatic tone like in other action games and movies, I've always been impressed with the believability of the VA in these games. In conclusion, I feel like this is easily the weakest entry in the original trilogy. The plot is pretty lazy, the ending is anticlimactic, there are too many different guns that do exactly the same thing, and many of the levels are sparse and unexciting (It took me 15 god damn minutes to find that last Aborigine on the stupid Outback level!!!). This game really shouldn't have been made; by the time it was released the PS2 was in full swing and they could have used the resources and time making this to improve The Omega Strain into a game on par with the first two games. Buy and play this if you're a completionist, but don't let it sour the total awesomeness of the first two games. So without further ado, here is Syphon Filter 3 played on a PS2 Slim.
