System Shock (2023) - The first 30 minutes on PC
Here are 30 minutes from the opening of System Shock (2023) on PC.
The review build, sans day-one patch, was surprisingly stable and performant at 1920x1080 and maximum settings on an ASUS TUF Dash F15, with an i7-11370H, RTX 3070 8GB, and 16GB RAM. Dropping to High settings and enabling DLSS Balanced mode was enough to get a lock close to my display's 144 Hz refresh 95% of the time, while 4K/60 was viable on my UHDTV. For this session, I played with a gamepad, but it's not something I'd not recommend at the moment as it feels too imprecise and makes combat encounters twice as hard.
We'll have a video review up soon but, in short, Nightdive Studios has done a fantastic job rebuilding the original from the ground up; staying true to the core mechanics, narrative framework, basic map layouts, and even the aesthetics to a degree; while also enhancing, expanding, and refining the experience so it’s closer in style to its sequel, System Shock 2 (1999). If you could never get into the original with it's weird FPS/point-and-click hybrid controls and garish visuals, this is a must-play.
