Table of Tales - PSVR Gameplay
Table of Tales is digital table top done right! I had a blast whit this game and can't wait to stream the rest of my campaign.
The magical table beautifully captured the look and feel of elaborate table top settings. Everything looked and felt like I was sitting at a real table. Not so much photo realism but you get the idea. The game really captured the spirit of siting at a table with a dedicated DM.
The only graphical issues lie with the hardware limitations of the PSVR. Some text is on the blurry side making it more difficult than it should be to read cards.
The voice acting was wonderful. Not only did the voice actress handle the birds voice but they did a pretty good job at voicing the NPCs in the birds voice. I've heard that's really hard to do well. Color me impressed.
The mechanics of the game were thoroughly enjoyable as well. From the pseudo dash to the cards representing your abilities. Most everything was intuitive and easy to use. I never felt like I was fighting the controls to do what I wanted aside from the occasional failures to correctly place a card on an enemy.
Some abilities didn't correctly display their target splat on all of the terrain it was supposed to. This seemed to really be an issue when an AOE ability would traverse over two different types or levels of terrain. Frustrating but once you realize you're just not seeing part of your target area you can work around it. Would like to see this patched up.
Speaking of abilities.... They could be better explained on the cards. For example, the shadow pet. The card simply states "Range 4 Summon a Shadow Creature" Nothing mentions the drawbacks of it also attacking you back. Same with the rogues hamstring card. It simply states "Inflict Stuck, Damage 2-3" These need to be better explained if they have drawbacks or cooldowns associated with them.
Since we're talking about better explaining things... Some of the mechanics need a better explanation. Anyone without any table top experience might not pick up on what needs to be done, what they're rolling for or what the goal is.
The fun factor of the game pretty much overshadows any of these complaints though.
If your choices really matter in this game then I expect a reasonably high level of replayability. Your choices definitely seem to matter with one of your first choices being who to 'kill off' right after your first encounter... (I still think this choice ends up the BBEG.) I haven't even touched on the local multiplayer yet. Couch asymmetrical multiplayer where the person in the headset is the BBEG and the 3 players with controllers are the heroes. Definitely adding to replayability.
Overall I had a great time with the game and can't wait to finish up the campaign. I'd love to see more games like Table of Tales across all VR platforms. Here's to hoping they cook up some DLC Tales for us!
