Space Ops VR has a lot of potential for an unreleased title. I had a blast playing it. Especially the boss fight at the end of the Spaceport mission. That being said there's still a lot to work on. A significant chunk of advertised features are not present in the game at the moment and the game is rather poorly optimized. I reached out to the dev team about these issues but haven't heard back as of publishing this video.

The environments were admittedly pretty boxy and bland. I'd love to see more variety and polish here. Some quality, varied environments can go a long way to help that first impression with gamers. On the other hand I really liked the UI. I'm not normally a fan of cluttering up my view with fake AR HUDs but I really enjoyed what Space Ops did. It was simple, elegant, functional. Subtle queues let the player know when their aim was on target or when they were switching over to alt fire or primary. It was useful and well done.

While graphics make a great first impression, mechanics and gameplay are what make a great game. Mechanically, Space Ops just felt good. The game was fun. Especially that final boss. It had a decently tuned difficulty where if you went in not knowing what to do you couldn't just faceroll it and win. If you came to the fight with a plan and knew the mechanics then it was pretty easy and just a matter of execution without making mistakes. This was beautifully done.

The enemy damage type resistances were also a nice touch. Space Ops keeps your mind engaged by making sure you're swapped to the appropriate weapon at the appropriate time for the right enemy. This feels similar to Borderlands elemental types. Corrosive for armor, fire for flesh, etc... I would love to see visual queues on the enemies to make their resistances make sense. Perhaps they are there and I just didn't pick up on them in my initial play through.

The only thing that would make the frenetic fire fights feel better would be enemies exploding into piles of loot! (BL3 still on the brain, sorry)

As an unreleased game Space Ops has its share of rough edges.

Why can't I grab my grenades with my right hand? I'm moving with my left hand as most right hand dominant players will be doing. That makes it rather awkward to run away and drop a decoy. If I need to use a decoy, chances are I don't have time to plant my feed, grab the grenade and throw it without dying.

Content seems to be a bit lacking. Right now we have a single, semi-random map. While fun, this lack of variety of content will definitely cause the game to get stale quickly.

There are several features missing from the advertised feature list at the moment. PvP, teaming up with your friends, trials, character customization... Releasing without these promised features and no roadmap for getting them into the game would be a very bad idea...

Lets talk performance. I had to record this video 3 times. The first was due to the client crashing and the graphics settings setting the resolution far higher than it should. High enough to crash the nvenc encoder and break OBS.

The second time, I lowered the resolution and kept all other settings on Ultra. This played fine in headset but the mirror window had horrible stuttering. This mirror window frame rate issue persisted on high and it wasn't until I went down to medium that I received acceptable frame rates for recording.

I have 2 overclocked 2080 TIs an overclocked 9900k all 3 water cooled with 64 GB 3733mhz ram. There's no reason why the game shouldn't run smooth as butter on the ultra settings. There's no reason I should be recording the game on medium settings.

Even on Med/Low settings the game continually crashed for me. Optimizations need to be very high on the todo list for Space Ops VR.

I want to love the game, I really do. I loved the gameplay and would love to see SOVR do well, unfortunately I think it's likely to release before it's ready.
