Vibrotactile displays are becoming increasingly common in everyday devices, with mobile phones, handheld computers and games controllers all featuring vibration feedback. The sense of touch offers a private and discrete channel through which information can be communicated, but the vibrations used in existing devices are usually very basic and do not fully exploit the potential of the sense of touch as a means of communication. In this talk I will present an overview of my PhD research, which has explored how to design effective vibrotactile messages, called Tactons, which could be used to present multidimensional information non-visually in computer interfaces. I will discuss the findings of my research and the implications of these for the use of tactile messages in human computer interaction.
