Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Not just an Arthurian Skyrim, contender for game of the year 2025
If nothing else, The Oblivion remaster proved this year, that there is a post-Daggerfall Elder Scrolls itch that a lot of people desperately want scratched. Tainted Grail: the Fall of Avalon might just be the game to do the trick.
Tainted Grail the Fall of Avalon has been labeled the “Arthurian Skyrim”, and, technically it is not a bad description. Just like Tainted Grail: Conquest could perfectly be described as the "Arthurian Slay the Spire"
But I think these titles are more than just skins for more popular card battlers and RPGs. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a strong candidate for game of the year 2025 not because of the things it does like the Elder Scrolls, but for the things it does differently. This one of the best pieces of Arthurian Dark Fantasy in media out there. It's one of the best tales about King Arthur. It uses the classic motifs of Arthurian Dark Fantasy like the cyclical nature of Arthur's rise to depict of a world where even the most noble intentions can have devastating consequences.
Awaken Realms is really cooking with the Tainted Grail IP. This might an open world RPG like Skyrim, Oblivion or Morrowind as far as its mechanics go, but
it’s also unique take on Arthurian fantasy that takes place in an intriguing world. A world in which arcane super natural beings and obscure druidic magic intertwine with the darkest demons of human nature. It features morally ambiguous characters and it has you journeying through a kingdom that never really lived up to the vision of its founder, and you have been burdened with the task of bringing him back so he gets one more chance to set things right and at the same time you have been asked to play your part to bring his cycle of resurrection to an end. Both of these missions feel larger than life and by the time you see one or the other through to the end, chances are you’ll label them as memorable passages in your mental recollection of gaming moments.
And for all of this, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is not only one of my favorite games this year, but one of the most rewarding games I’ve played in the 2020’ and one of the best games of the last 10 years. And that’s why it gets a solid recommendation from yours truly.
