Wrestlequest is a pixelated RPG coming out on PC tomorrow, 8th August 2023. At first glance, this may not seem like a cozy game; after all, wrestling is entirely combat-based, and most cozy games contain little to no combat. But playing the game has a warm, nostalgic feeling and the combat has a simple, turn-based battle style somewhat like a Pokemon battle.

In the first part of the demo, you play as Randy Santos, an amateur wrestler and Randy Savage superfan. Later, you instead gain control of Brink and Stag Logan, two professional wrestlers. And yes, Stag is, well… a stag. The game is much more narrative-driven than I expected, and I found myself compelled to learn more about these characters and what will happen to them next. Randy, for example, decides to pursue his dream of becoming a pro-wrestler.

There are several things I really love about this demo. Firstly, the pixelated graphics and retro vibes really set this apart from other wrestling games. The demo includes several pretty awesome music tracks in various genres, and the narrative is laced with a humour that is often wholesome. Case in point: Randy praying to his massive Macho Man poster at night. Pixelated Randy Savage and Jake The Snake were also highlights.

There are, however, some things I didn't enjoy so much. I did find the game a bit slow to get started. The first actual gameplay was about ten minutes into the demo. I also found the controls quite confusing at times. There is an option to use a controller, but I generally prefer keyboard and mouse, so I went with that. However, most of the controls are keyboard only, which took a bit of getting used to. There were also times when I wasn't sure which keys to use, as the tutorial didn't tell me.

Finally, and this could be either a pro or a con depending on viewpoint, the switch between characters felt sudden and unexplained. This could be a really clever narrative device to make the game more interesting, but, for me, that didn't come across in the demo. Although I enjoyed all the characters, it wasn't clear which I will be playing as if I purchase the full game. Perhaps the game involves switching between several playable characters, which could be interesting.

In conclusion, I did enjoy the demo and am strongly considering buying the full game, as I really want to see Randy achieve his dream!
