Taking a Look at the Sega Nomad
One of only two systems of its kind, the Sega Nomad was released in the US in 1995 for $180 USD. Like the NEC TurboExpress, it played Sega's then-current generation console games on the go. Though it was never released in Europe, the Nomad played Genesis games, as well as many Mega Drive games.
With ports for a DC power supply, AV out and a second controller, the Nomad could also function as a home console. A detachable battery pack housed 6 AA batteries for on-the-go play and lasted for only a few hours.
The Nomad is heavy and bulky, and while portable, isn't all that suited for rigorous travel. The backlit color screen has great resolution for its time, and while it does get a bit washed out and suffer from slight ghosting, it looks pretty darn good.
The Sega Nomad is a tough handheld to recommend for most folks, as it does get a bit pricey on eBay while Genesis/Mega Drive consoles are often considerably cheaper. But this is a really cool piece of gaming history, and certainly worth a look for a more dedicated collector.
