You really have to hand it to Ubisoft; they really nailed it with Red Steel 2. They threw out the design of the first game and started anew, keeping only the name, and the sword-and-gun mechanics. You're looking at a brand new game, and a better game at that. A great game.

Red Steel 2 works only with the Wii Motion+ accessory, and even comes bundled with it as an option. The addition of WM+ gives the sword fighting new life. While the game doesn't truly mimic your movements 1:1, it comes very close within the rules and boundaries of the game. Your angle and speed matter, and combat can get quite physical. Switching to your firearm is as simple as pointing at the screen and pulling the B trigger. Everything works mostly as you think it would, and it feels great.

Red Steel 2 plays a lot like like a beat'em up, but also incorporates side quests, exploration and secret collectibles to find. As you wander the world of Caldera, enemies will jump in and you'll have to take them all out. Your health automatically refills after every encounter, which keeps you in the game rather than endlessly searching out restorative items, or hiding behind rocks for regenerating health mid-fight. On the other hand, don't think this means the game is easy. Some fights will really push you to use all your abilities and test your expertise.

Visually, Red Steel 2 has few peers. I can say, without exaggeration, that Red Steel 2 running at 480p could be confused for an Xbox 360 game running at 720p. I wish that were a joke, as it would save me from the onslaught of 360 fans (or Wii denouncers) crying foul, but it's true. With a combination of the Wii's sheer horsepower and an extremely smart art style, Red Steel 2 looks brilliant. Colorful, detailed environments, great textures, suburb animations and a noticeable lack of aliasing.

If you have a Wii, this is hands down a must own. This is one of the most well-done, polished and just straight out fun experiences I've had on the little machine, and I vehemently recommend it to anyone.
