Tales Battle [テイルズバトル] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
Now here's a strange old "Tales of" doujin fighter. While there are several fighters based on the Tales series (FIght of Project: Mixes, A.C.S., etc.), this one is interesting because it has a couple of odd characters. It has gone under several renditions, adding and removing characters in the process (Removing Dhaos, Mithos/Yggdrasil...adding Loni, Rutee, etc.). As I mentioned, this game does have Rutee in it, and she isn't in too many Tales of Doujin (as far as I know anyway) so I used her...and I'm REALLY surprised that Natalia made an appearance, but she's kinda lame, so I didn't use her. There's also Veigue from Tales of Rebirth, whereas A.C.S. has Hilda, blah, blah, blah (though Veigue is kinda overpowered and has a team attack that features Hilda and another person).
The game has a few interesting "FOF" attacks; special attacks that you can use when the gauge at the top center of the screen fills up on the light or dark side. Depending on which side is flashing, you can use a different FOF attack. The attacks vary in usefulness and are hard to incorporate in combos due to the limited amount of time you have to use them, but they can help in a pinch. Characters have a large variety of moves and there is also the "T" style and "S" style, which changes a character's moves significantly...so each character is essentially two characters. You can change styles on the fly.
The visuals are so-so and the music is okay too; my thing about the music is this; there is so much better music to be used from the Tales series...why do these doujin games always seem to have generic ones? Tales of Legendia has some great music and no one wants to use any of it...heck, if you don't like anything about ToL, at least like the music. Even the MIDI-sounding versions of the music could have been better. The gameplay allows for pretty big combos, but the controls can be a little annoying sometimes.
