Fushigi no Yume no Alice, or "Alice in Wonder Dream" is a Japanese title partially based on the classic novel of the 1800s, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

The game tells the tale of Alice, an innocent, somewhat precocious girl who falls into a particularly deep sleep, where she slips into "The World of Fairy Tales" to enjoy herself. However, one day, her dreams are abruptly manipulated by demons (called Mamono, whose traits mimic that of "Mammon", portrayed as one who is greedy and unjust) who single-handedly took over the dream world, turning it into a land of nightmares. A messenger of the dream world, a rabbit, tells Alice the depth of Mamono's plot and that Mamono wishes to be the master of fairy tales. Alice can't awaken unless Mamono is stopped. With more than just her courage, Alice departs to confront and dispel Mamono's nightmare powers so she can wake up. "Mamono" itself means goblin or apparition.

Playing as Alice, you go through this platformer which really isn't much different from every other platformer in existence. Alice can defeat enemies by kicking bombs around, screaming "IYA", and jumping on enemies. She can also cast various spells she gains through the course of the game for support abilities like finding hidden items, jumping higher, etc. There are various pick-ups which range from improving the strength of your attacks to healing you to increasing maximum health and magic and more. Unlike many platformers, a boss is fought after each level within the same world. The game is bright and colorful with a quirky+upbeat soundtrack and overall decent presentation, but the gameplay is subpar, if only because of the relatively poor play control which is so important to enjoying a game of this kind.

Alice always feels like she's on ice and just climbing up and down ladders can prove to be a challenge. Her jumping also proves to be quite lethal compared to most of her other means of attack, but jumping on enemies is hard enough in and of itself. Most enemies manuever swiftly and hastily and you'll have a hard enough time trying not to accidentally slide into one.

As if all this wasn't annoying enough, Alice has a "scream gauge" which determines the strength of her screams; if it starts to flash and you don't scream, she'll start to choke and end up completely defenseless-- this can happen in a matter of a few seconds and is more annoying than it sounds as she can't scream crouching and there are times where you're dodging and don't have the opportunity to let out a scream (in the game; you'll scream at the top of your lungs in realtime). It's also a little annoying that she doesn't keep the upgrades she gets from previous levels. The levels are harder than the bosses.

Had it not been for the relatively well-designed levels which make the game a little more forgiving, this game would probably fall in league with games like "Kid Kool". This is a video of the first few levels. Enjoy.
