Talking Pixels -- Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy IV is one of the many games I played on an emulator before getting the physical game. It’s a very fun JRPG, and one of the games I have some good memories of playing with my friends. It tells the story of Cecil, who starts out as a Dark Knight, trying to save the world from a big bad guy. You are trying, and failing, to protect the four light crystals and the four dark crystals. The first bad guy is Goblez, until he changes his mind, and then you fight Zemus who turns into the real bad guy.
This has a lot of things which would eventually be done better in other Final Fantasy games. There is the switch between bad guys, the spell Meteo which I’m pretty sure becomes Meteor, the summonings are done very well, and it has what I think was a prototype for Weapon in Final Fantasy VII in the Giant of Bab’il. You also have a fairly large party which I wish they had done more with. Characters come and go, often times sacrificing themselves so you can advance the plot. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t go all the way with it.
I was playing the SNES version, and if you played the later versions there might have been other things added to the game which I missed. I wanted to play this one because it was the version I first played. I have a few other versions like the PS1 and the Gameboy Advanced. There are others out there though as well as the upcoming pixel remaster. This is just the one I have the most memories of.
