Tallowmere is a 2d roguelike platformer, originally released in 2015, by New Zealand based developer Chris McFarland . At it’s heart Tallowmere is a dungeon crawler with permadeath, meaning you play through each run completing room to room as you level up your character. Getting better and different gear, increasing your health and attack stats, and taking on more challenging enemies. However when you die, you are dead, done, kaput...Starting back at the beginning with the exact same gear and stats you had before.

This style of gameplay has become a favorite of mine over the past couple of years, starting with the binding of isaac. When you jump back into your new fun the levels are freshly procedurally generated, so they have a new layout every time, new weapons, and new enemies to face out against. Giving you the gift of infinite replayability. Which is perfect for the handheld pick up and play nature of the switch. Jump on the subway play through a run or a few if you die quickly, sleep mode and off to work.

Tallowmere’s gameplay is as tough as it is riveting. With relatively simple but sturdy mechanics... Y is attack, right trigger shield blocks, and B is an infinite jump. With little tweaks to your playstyle having a huge impact. When jumping normally you jump rather high, which creates a challenge when trying to navigate tight passageways lined with spikes. However if you hold up your shield while jumping you move in tiny little jumps that allow you to be more precise. The controls are extremely tight and despite the challenging level of difficulty you never feel that you died because of a mechanical error but your own fatal error!

Enemies in Tallowmere have a variety of different attack patterns to keep you own your toes. From scorpion style get over here spears, to stun spell throwing mages, throughout each room in your dungeon run you’ll reach multiple points where you have to stop and re strategize your way to the next room.

With solid mechanics, challenging gameplay, and variety from run to run. Tallowmere captured my attention from the moment I sat down and repeated started dying, then running back into battle Axe blazing. Despite it’s incredibly simple aesthetic it’s a mechanically sound home run of a roguelike platformer, with enough variety to keep my excited to fire up my switch on my morning commute to gain some dope weapons and lose a couple lives.
