I have no idea if this werewolf sidequest is mandatory, but I recommend doing it to get some money and EXP. It may just save you some revive items in the Technopolis dungeon.

Midwich Prairie has three major locations: a house, a hole in the ground, and a cave. The house has a retired werewolf slayer, who will give you anti-wolf weapons if you give him Zolom meat. To get Zolom meat, you need to go to the hole in the ground and fight Zoloms as random encounters. Watch out, since they have powerful AOE skills.

Once you deliver the Zolom meat to the slayer and get his weapons, you can head over to Blackrock Cavern. You'll find the woman's husband, who somehow survived the attack. Eventually, you'll find an upward-leading ladder, which starts the boss fight.

He absorbs earth, but he also mainly uses physical attacks, so it may be worth using Power Crush at the start of the fight.

You'll get the Fenrir stone, which can be used to summon the werewolf as a 5th party member. Unfortunately, he will only gain levels in battles that he's present for and he's really not that strong. At best, he's a meatshield that could potentially soak up a strong single-target attack. Maybe if the summonable allies could act in the same turn they were summoned in, the summon system would feel a bit more useful. IMO, this summon system feels more like an afterthought than a fully-fleshed out feature.
