Tank Force || Map Creation Process - Part 2
Hello ladies and getlemen and welcome back to the World of Games channel.
Today we’re going to talk a bit more about the map creation process. This is the second part in this video series. If you missed out on part 1 please click the info button on top of the screen.
As you have seen in part 1 this story goes about the creation of the new map “The Swamp”. This new map will be available very soon.
In part 1 we talked about the formulation of the idea and naming the location. In this part we’re going to talk about Map scheme creation, simple map blocking, testing of the simple map blocking and sending the map into the final work stage.
First let’s talk about the map scheme creation:
During the map creation, the game designers are usually looking at some real places as references, and change that location if necessary.
In the situation with The Swamp, the map reference, were places of some Russian countryside.
After the reference was choosen, the game designers created a topographic map of the future battle location with the key objects already on certain places and ideas of how the battle will go.
It is really important at this stage, to place the key elements and other objects as such, both teams are balanced. In other words … both teams must have equal possibilities.
The second step is the Simple map blocking.
At this stage, the game designers send the map to the pre-work stage, to create a simple landscape and the whole "spirit" of the map.
The task for the Swamp was as follows:
The swamp in the map, doesn’t exist for long at this point. The ground is still able to withstand the weight of the heavy vehicles. There are Lots of old and dead trees. Also Open water places. There are also Residues of human living, like the old farm. The Map has different height variations and of course, not to forget, Large pieces of a crashed airplane.
After receiving such simple model of the map - the game designers starts to place more simple objects on the map, according to the previous scheme. Changes are made if nessecary.
The next step is the testing of the Simple map blocking
Tank Force testers are having a look at the map now. They check the possibilities to go to certain places on the map. Also they check all possibilities to get tot he key elements. Etc. etc.
According to their feedback, some changes may be made.
Then the map goes tot he final work stage:
After the final changes in the Simple map blocking - the game designers are creating a list of nessecary objects and the coordinates of where they have tob e placed on the map. Also they have a look at future effects, events, needed sounds and last but not least the bases and spawn points.
After all this work is done, the map goes tot he Art Division.
That’s all for now. Next time we will talk about the finishing touches in the process of map creation.
