Let's see: limited ammo confining one mostly to the SSG and Chaingun, no Berserk Pack, low health, dense population with an emphasis on medium size monsters and hitscanners. Yep, it's The Darkening E2. This one, though, throws in some tricky ledge walking which has to be done quickly and a monster that's incredibly easy to miss. It's so easy to miss, in fact, that, despite having three posted demos, the level didn't have a valid max until a few days ago when vdgg posted his 6:58.

Starting the demo took a bit of time. There are two options when it comes to the courtyard: take out most of the monsters before running for the switch, or run for the switch, shooting as you go. The latter is used in this demo, of course, but I don't expect to see it anywhere else. Spending several seconds out in the open, surrounded by Sergeants and a pair of Chaingunners, is just plain suicidal in a level that rations health.

Ending the demo wasn't easy, either; the last area is tough. Getting to the BFG quickly is the biggest obstacle. I made quite an effort to straferun from the tiny ledge to the BFG ledge, but I just don't think it's possible. If only the ledge were a few pixels thicker there might be enough room. The other option, which I didn't try, is a rocket jump. I'm pretty sure this way is possible, but I'd already used the last of my rockets to take out a Baron and Mancubus. I doubt it would've been faster, though, as SSGing either of the two monsters would take as much time as traversing the entire ledge.

Overall, I'd say this turned out pretty well. The most memorable moment is probably the continuous 315 degree rocket attack as I'm finishing off the Cacodemon hoard. Also, watch for two separate instances of the extremely rare four rocket Baron kill.
