⚠ END UPDATE ⚠
I decided to do a compilation of all original cast of characters of super smash bros 64 in race to the finish mode.
At first, this mode is not fun, the polygons are too aggressive and annoying, therefore it makes it very difficult to get a good run with both TAS and RTA. And also because of how linear it is, it doesn't make it interesting to see what we say, it's just basic movement optimization.
However, to my surprise, getting hit by a polygon help us get ahead more, even colliding with the barrels and bumpers. Besides the polygons in this case were very good, as far as helping with damage and distance is concerned. It sounds strange from the start that taking damage from polygons is faster than getting past them, but apparently I found the holy trinity polygon, as each one plays a fundamental role in obtaining insane damage, thus insane times. The first one may vary, because there may be another polygon whose attack may not have as much hitlag, therefore it may not cause as much hitstun; Poly Link even so, it didn't affect the characters to any great extent, only the heavy ones a little bit; Poly yoshi was great to increase our damage and therefore to make us advance further, his attacks are good overall, despite the setup of dair then d-smash or up smash looks slower at first glance, it just seems to be detrimental to heavy characters but not so much actually; Poly falcon at last is good on his own, such is the case of his up air, an amazing attack in order to get the finish faster, although depending the situation he would attack with dair then f-smash which is also good.
So, with these TASes, this mode became a bit more interesting to watch at least, but actually the process to make them wasn't as simple as it seems; Even though it looks the same with all the characters it was not easy to find this combination of polys and even though it works for all of them, the polys don't always want to cooperate. It's quite complicated to manipulate them, too many options that affect their behavior and do not allow to improve the current times, so far it's the best I've done. Because of that, I was dissatisfied with some of these times, but isn't to be taken so seriously in going deeper than anything to do with RNG tho. At least not in the near future; I'm already done with the original cast of characters, and there are still the remix characters, these will come out from time to time I guess.
I hope this compilation isn't so boring, here I'll put a playlist of each TAS run uploaded one by one (in case you don't want to see a compilation with this music either): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9wl73uYaDdksNU1HQU3MzH1mveV_ynWG
It really was a long, tiring but at the same time fun and addictive way to make these TASes and I'm glad it was worth it. Biggest shoutouts to Razz and KM for helping me with ideas and inspire me to continue to TASing this mode, thus to have found these strats to achieve these insane times.
