Tech Romancer is, simply put, a mecha anime fighting game that was made for arcades and Sega Dreamcast. However, not so simply put, it is a pretty fun and neat game that draws many influences from different anime and manga! While the character roster may seem small to some (9 to start, with a few hidden ones) and the fighting might seem fairly "vanilla", compared to the wackier and ultra competitive games now, Tech Romancer was interesting for a time because there weren't too many mecha fighting games for one...unless you crave "Rise of the Robots"...well, I suppose you could have at that. There were also some other ones like Metal and Lace 1 and 2 (though "2" did not get an English release and does not go by Metal and Lace)...some mecha fighting games were better than others, but Tech Romancer generally has Capcom's signature "touch", as it goes with fighting games. The game also benefits from a bit of "3D" movement to run around the stages (and collect items to aid you), rather than fight strictly from left to right (or vice versa).

Besides those things, the game had a lot of unlockable content, which made for a lot of replayability (I don't think it is "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2" heavy, but that isn't even necessary). There were VMU mini-games to unlock, galleries, and as stated before, characters. The visuals...I want to laugh; I don't mind them particularly, but once you play something like SoulCaliber on the Dreamcast, as far as fighters go...naturally, it's going to be hard for me to say with a straight face that the game looks great...so it's subjective. It doesn't look "great"; however, I am sure many will feel that the game looks decent and suits their tastes just fine. The game is colorful and the anime artwork is decent. The music is kind of what you might expect for a game like this...it may remind you of "superhero" or "robot" anime. That's actually a great thing, BUT, to be fair again, your mileage might vary with that. Some may have wanted the music to stand out more...some may think the music is forgettable trash. As a whole though, I think this is one of those games where if you like what you see and you like mecha anime (or anime in general) and you didn't think a fighter like this existed for Dreamcast, you will generally like it.

To bring up a bit of miscellaneous information, I said that the game draws a lot of influences from anime...let me name a few. Cutie Honey, Macross (on the note of Macross, Studio Nue, mentioned in the opening anime intro, is the animation studio responsible for the mechanical designs for the mecha anime series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross), Gundam, Mazinger Z, and more! The different influences alone are quite intriguing and make Tech Romancer at least worth a look. You can get a lot more information (there are spoilers) at:
