Hmmm...PSP sure had some odd games and those odd games were, at times, pretty interesting. Some had an acquired taste, and some others, were great...some were also bad too. In a way though, the PSP was home to more gems and obscurities than it's big brother/sister, the PS Vita...though both, ultimately, are good units to own. Today's game is Dungeon Maker II: The Hidden War, and as you might expect, there was a game before it (though the sequel expands on it in a good way, for the most part). The previous game was published by the kind folks at XSEED (who thought the premise had potential) in North America and the sequel was published by "UFO". The game is developed by the relatively low-budget developer known as "GAE" (Global A Entertainment)...let's begin to discuss the game in a hasty, but (hopefully) informative manner given YT text limitations!

You basically play the role of a dungeon maker who abhors the death and destruction caused by the monsters in the area and makes "attractive" dungeons to lure them in and slay them...brutal, right? More of the story and intro stuff can be watched in the video (and skipped by jumping to 13:05 on the video timeline), but ultimately, your primary goal is to defeat some demon named "Revenger".

The game doesn't look so bad, but it certainly isn't super flashy (though the art is decent enough)...the music, while decent, isn't jaw-dropping and the story is pretty straightforward, though the game does try to have a bit of constantly changing dialogue for the small town area you operate out of...with bits and pieces of humor, so the game isn't dry the entire time you play. The real factor of interest with the game is the gameplay...there were numerous "maker" games throughout history, such as Monster Maker, Princess Maker, RPG Maker, Fighter Maker...all the games, in varying degrees, were quite interesting. However, oddly, it took a while before a DUNGEON MAKER came around...well, that's not ENTIRELY true...things were done here and there (Tecmo's Deception allowed you to add rooms and hallways to the castle) but with DM and DMII, the premise is one with great potential. As for this game, it's not too shabby...I would love to see something built from this.

Anyway, you do quests, gather materials and items, get magic, and make dungeons, among a few other things...for the sake of space, I will just discuss dungeon creation. You actually can make rooms and corridors and design the rooms, which attracts different monsters who have various drops and are needed for different quests and the like. The game is slow-going, but it can be a bit fun and addictive in small spurts, as the game requires you to do a LOT to get great dungeons and fight the strongest monsters. Speaking of monsters, you get a "Genju", a familiar that can transform into various monsters (or a "human" or "humans") and is a pet that aids you in dungeons...fortunately, the genju can be pretty decent extra help and act as a shield from time to time, but the AI is pretty poor, so until the genju gets stronger, you kind of have to babysit it. All in all, the game should be pretty cheap and if you like what you see, give it a try.
