Technic Beat Game Sample - Playstation 2
Original Air Date: August 08th, 2009 (Revised Today!)
It's games like this that make me glad to dive into the less mainstream spectrum of gaming. This obscure beauty is so cool and a homage to what matters most in a video game -- the gameplay and the fun. I had this game for a while now but only played it not long ago, but let me tell you; If you can find it and you like music and/or rhythm games in the slightest, you should most definitely add this one to your collection. After all, there aren't many games like this where you can play with a Teddy Bear or a animal in scuba gear.
Technic Beat is a little-known ryhthm game developed by Arika (creator of the Street Fighter EX games and obscure wonders like Everblue and Espgaluda) that has a nice, simple visual style and simple premise, but is addictive as all hell. After you see one of this games' several charming characters (who tells you the date according to your system settings), you're presented by a psychadelic little opening. From there, you can jump into a variety of game modes from tough versus battles to challenges galore.
The idea of the game is simple enough. You have to move around towards different circles on the field and detonate them at the right time to add harmony to the music, but it's not that simple. Some circles are big, some are little, some close fast, some close slow, some are purposely positioned in awkward places to throw off your train of thought -- what's a person to do!? Each character has several special characteristics unique to them. Some are slow but can carry circles around with them and slow their detonation while others can detonate everything on the screen at once or slide, to name a few. You'll have to use your noodle and memorize some of the patterns if you want to get really good at this game and beating your personal best is only half the fun.
The best part about this game however... IS THE MUSIC. It has a rather astonishing selection of tracks and remixes of various themes from popular video games, obscure classics, and golden oldies -- OVER 80. Youkai Douchuuki (same), Toy Pop (same), Cosmo Gang the Video (same), Sakura Mankai (Street Fighter EX2), Brisa do Mar (Everblue 2), Purachina (Cardcaptor Sakura), The Tower of Druaga (same), Rolling Thunder (same), Ancient Zone (Street Fighter EX3), Burning Force (same), Splatter House (same), just to name a few!!!!! There are so many great tunes in here from games most folks overseas have never played and several tunes from games that were released but people have never heard of. This game is a cornucopia of freaking goodness and WIN.
If you like games like this then... GET. IT. NAO. Thanks for bringing this one stateside Mastiff!
Note: This video was done at higher quality and shows more songs. I could've played a little better, but used both audio jacks for the Dazzle (so no audio from my T.V.). The main reason it was redone was to show two remixes I was very curious about: Libble Rabble (Arc/SFC/Etc.) and Burning Force ( Arc/Gen/MD/Wii; it's one of the hardest songs in the game, star-wise). I think you'll find them interesting. Enjoy.
