Rikimaru Mission 1/ Level 1: Punish the Evil Merchant
Rikimaru and Ayame are back with "Tenchu 3" on the "Playstation 2" I guess a shadow never dies, eh? Here's the first mission of the 3rd Tenchu game, and it's a fun one. With new moves, fancy weapons and decapitations I think i'll have as much fun as ever.
I also really love Tenchu 3's "opening cutscene". Though I do put it 3rd behind Tenchu 1 and Tenchu 2's. Tenchu Fatal Shadows probably has the best energy for getting me hyped to sneak up on unexpected guards.

I bought this amazing title when it first released in 2003. Tenchu was always a beloved series of mine, having played through the first two games on the Playstation 1 many times, and spending countless hours creating missions in Tenchu 2's beautiful mission editor. A gameplay sorely missed in this game.
Well, Tenchu 3 Wrath Of Heaven lived up to the hype. Trying to keep both story from Tenchu 2 and bring back the atmosphere from Tenchu 1, it's a beautiful mix of both worlds. To add to the game was the return of a great OST, something the second Tenchu lacked outside of some key moments and boss fights.
Picking up after the events of Tenchu 1 Stealth Assassins, I wasn't surprised to learn we'd play as Rikimaru. Despite the ending of the original game, Rikimaru proved too popular to remove from the series. What I wasn't expecting was the return of (spoilers ahead) Onikage and Tatsumaru. Both of whom are addictingly fun to play as in the Vs. Mode Tenchu 3 replaced the Mission Editor with. But in terms of story they're both deadly to face.
I enjoyed Tenchu 3's story, though it didn't live up to the emotional heights of Tenchu 2, it did feel more in line with the tone of the original game, creating a more fitting, experience.

After Mei-Oh was defeated in Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, "Rikimaru" was left in Mei-Oh's fortress carrying a giant boulder to provide an escape route for "Ayame" and Princess Kiku. He appears to be trapped and left for dead. Ayame stuck Rikimaru's sword, Izayoi (he is seen drawing this sword in the opening CG of Wrath of Heaven) in snow as a monument for her fellow ninja, now considered dead. A year later, Rikimaru reports to Lord Gohda that he has managed to survive this near-death experience; unbeknownst to them, the real #Rikimaru is trapped in the 20th century trying to find a way back to their time.
Tenchu Wrath of Heaven's game's plot plays differently depending on the character chosen, but connects at certain points. The story revolves mainly in Rikimaru's return and the struggle for the Three Jewels, which are said to give power to those who possess them. These are the Jewels of Heaven, Earth, and Virtue. Tenrai, an evil wizard who wants to get his hands on them, commands a band of his men to take the Jewels from whoever possesses them. However, upon encountering Rikimaru, he seems interested in his power and attempts convincing him to join his men. Rikimaru refuse, and he and Ayame face each one of them. One of the men in Tenrai's arsenal is "Onikage", who only serves him to pursue his plan of reviving Mei-Oh (his former master) and "Tatsumaru" (the former leader of the Azuma ninja clan whom Tenrai revived). Rikimaru and Ayame follow Tenrai into his fortress to stop him from destroying the world using the power gained from two of the Jewels. If he can be defeated, peace will be returned to Gohda's land.
