It's the little things in the virtual world that create the emersion. I always enjoyed the Bitter Coast thunder and rain in Morrowind and got a nice sense of virtual warmth when I made it back home. Skyrim is much more emmersive thanks to the graphics mostly. When you make it back to your house you can almost feel and see the steam lifting off your wet clothes. It sounds cheesy, I know, but short of enjoying a thunderstorm in real life would be enjoying a thunderstorm in Skyrim.
