Testing wall designs using laser - gun turrets! And the winner is...
367After i have made various videos completely ignoring them i tried for the first time to give some attention to wall defenses! The goal using walls in Factorio is mainly to slow down the enemies, otherwise if you block the enemies movement they attack the walls to go through! Regardless what your intuition is telling you the best wall designs are those with gaps that don't put any stop to the enemy at all (the flamethrower turret when used alone is the only case scenario where even a brief stop can prove more beneficial).
As for the winning design you can see it after 4:30. I pushed it more than the rest and it fared pretty well. Still though.... the best base defense in Factorio with minimum structures used can been seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWTlgFCgP8E&t=13s
Sorry wall defenses but nothing can beat the mighty Spidertron!
