Tetris 99 - Donkey Kong
And I think this rounds out the NES themed Tetris 99 skins, at least for now. Donkey Kong I thought was going to be the least interesting one, but I found this to be my favorite of the three due to how much they did with the sparse source material. Once again, they have a neat remix of the various songs in the initial Donkey Kong game for the arcades, which has an 80s feel to it, appropriately enough. And the background is more animated than the other NES themes, with the heat and embers coming up from the bottom representing the lit oil drums.
KOed players are depicted as fainted Jumpmans...or is it Jumpmen? Ones you've personally KOed have yellow lettering instead of white, and there is a white aura around the Jumpman sprite. Badges in this skin take the form of Hammers, fitting considering it's the game's signature power-up. When only ten players remain, the music becomes a remix of the Hammer's theme. If you're eliminated, the jingle plays when Jumpman is defeated, and if you manage to take 1st place, you get to hear the jingle that plays when you've thwarted Donkey Kong on the last stage.
A bit of trivia: Donkey Kong was originally meant to be a Popeye game. Mario, AKA Jumpman, was to be Popeye, Pauline was to be Olive Oyl, and Donkey Kong was supposed to be Bluto. Nintendo could not get the rights from King Features Syndicate, so they made this instead, in part to show that they could establish themselves as a name in video games. Once they did with Donkey Kong, Nintendo got the Popeye rights. As a result, I would like to see Popeye show up in the Smash Bros. roster due to his significance to early Nintendo history. I don't think it will happen though.
Match #1
Skin: Donkey Kong
Mode: Normal
Something I noticed about the Badge system in Tetris 99 is that the earlier you can get KOs, the better off you'll be because you'll have the early advantage in fending yourself off from other people. To that end, for quite a while in this match, I found myself as the one with the most Badges (including Badge fragments). And consequently, I always found myself targeted by a bunch of people because, I'm guessing, they're set to Badges. After my 4th KO though, I'd sit on that number for quite a while, so the match proceeded in a more normal fashion. Not that getting Badges late doesn't work, of course, since I've placed well or even won my share of matches where I didn't get any Badges until very late in (or got none at all).
Match #2
Skin: Donkey Kong
Mode: Invictus
I don't think I've shown an Invictus match in a while, so here you go! Those people who can get dozens upon dozens of KOs in regular matches--I wonder how they do in Invictus. Do they prefer playing on Invictus? Sometimes, I'm in an Invictus mood, and sometimes, I'm not. No, the speed does not overwhelm me; rather, it's the players, as in Invictus, when I get attacked, I get absolutely CLOBBERED. But that's fine too, because I know I often launch deluges like that myself...just not at the rate of those aforementioned crazy players.
Match #3
Skin: Donkey Kong
Mode: Normal
Remember how I said I sometimes get targeted by a lot of people? It sounds like a bad thing, but in Tetris 99, that isn't necessarily so, considering you get a garbage bonus when you attack when targeted by multiple people. (This used to be just Attackers, but an update allowed you to do the same with the other three targeting styles, as is manual targeting.) You can see so in this match, where I just basically used being picked on as a way to counterattack en masse, making it more likely for me to get KOs. Most of my best matches play out in this way, really.
