Released in 1990 by U.S. Gold, Gauntlet III: The Final Quest marks a bold evolution for the beloved dungeon-crawling series on the ZX Spectrum. While the original Gauntlet and its sequel captivated players with top-down arcade action, this third installment shifts to an isometric 3D perspective, breathing new life into the formula. This adventure boasts 15 massive environments and 8 new characters with an array of traits and abilities. On paper an isometric Gauntlet game sounds bonkers, but is actually plays extremely fast and still has that feeling of getting mobbed by a horde of ghosts, zombies, mummies, and venus flytraps. There's more navigation of maze-like environments filled with obstacles such as logs and tables to interact with. Each environment has a mission type objective to complete which adds a bit more depth. \nGauntlet III: The Final Quest is a worthy sequel that innovates while staying true to the series' spirit. It's not perfect—the isometric shift brings as many headaches as highlights—but for ZX Spectrum owners in 90s, it was a mapper's dream and a blast in two-player mode.
