TF2: How to Record/Watch/ and Install Demos
In this video I will be showing you how to use the demo feature in TF2 to record your matches showing you how to watch them and also how to install a Demo file such as an STV from Faceit or RGL.
Sorry if you can hear my dogs in the background
I have a custom hud installed, but that does not change the steps, you will just need to find where Options and Advanced Options are for your hud. For default hud Options is on the bottom right of the main menu and it is a gear icon and Advanced Options is on the bottom right of the main menu to the right of Options with a gear + icon.

Here is the tutorial in text form as well
First
Open up the games console by pressing the tilde key (the ~ line key) which is below the ESC Key and to the left of the 1 key on most keyboards
If it doesn't open up for you, you most likely don't have it setup, Ill quickly take you through those steps to enable console
First your gonna want to open your Options, click Advanced, and Enable Developer Console
Click OK
this step is optional
In Options, under Keyboard scroll all the way down to the bottom and you should see Toggle developer console and it is defaulted to the tilde key, if it isn't bound to a key or is bound to a different key you can change it or bind to what ever key you prefer, press Apply
Now close out of Options by pressing the X in the top right of the box or the Cancel button in the bottom right
Now press the tilde key and the console should open
Second
Now that we have the console all set up to be opened and used now we want to join a server
for this I am just gonna be joining my own offline server but it will work the same way for any server you join
Once your in game open the console with tilde
To start a demo recording type in the console record demoname
this name can be anything you want
for this example I am going to use testdemo as the name of the demo
Once you get that sick frag or are done recording just type stop into the console and the recording will stop
Third
To watch the demo we just recorded open the demo and type playdemo demoname
replace demoname with the name you chose to name your demo
so for me I will type playdemo testdemo
as you can see what we just recorded is now playing and we now have the ability to record it with a third-party recorder to do editing to and upload to YouTube for example
while playing your demo, you may need to pause rewind or fast forward to do this open your console and type demoui or you can type demoui2, they both do the same thing just demoui2 is more simplified
Fourth
Now on to installing STV Demos from somewhere else, lets say faceit or from a RGL or UGC match you just played
First off you will need to get the demo file from where its being hosted, on Faceit when you finish a match you can find a button that says Watch Demo in the match lobby once the match has concluded or on your faceit profile by clicking on Matches scrolling down to the match you want to view, click on the match and go to Overview and there you will see the button to download the STV Demo
For RGL or UGC matches you will need to contact the server hoster where the STV Demo was uploaded or for the file outright
now once you download the demo file you want to watch
for me it installed in a zip format so all I need to do is open the zip file and extract the demo file to my team fortress 2/tf folder
now go back into tf2 and open the console
and type playdemo and the name of the demo
with STV demos they give you freedom of your view as STVs are recorded as if you where a spectator of the match
Fifth
TF2 has an option built into the game to Auto record demos for you
First you are going to want to open TF2 Advanced Options, note this is not the same Advanced Options we used to enable console, this is All the advanced options of the game
Scroll down till you find Demo Support
here you can customize when it records where it records and the such
for recording mode you get 4 choices
Manual, meaning you have to go to the console and start and stop each demo you want to record
Auto Record Competitive Matches, meaning it will auto record VALVE only Competitive matches
Auto Record All Matches, every game you play will start a demo
Auto Record Tournament Matches, meaning every THIRD PARTY Competitive game, such as Faceit, UGC, RGL will record a demo
these demos are auto recorded to a folder called demos to load on of these demos you can open the console and type
playdemo tf\demos\(name of demo)
