"Hi, my name is Geir, however. This story isn't about me, it's about my mother, Laila. She is supposed to be enjoying her golden years, but due to some lack of tech knowledge, she has put herself in considerable debt.
Let me explain, a couple of years ago. Our country Norway decided to go digital, meaning that basically all crucial documents, like bills and stuff were to be sent through a digital platform, known as Digipost. Now, my mother being an older lady did not grow up in this digital world so things like this didn't come naturally to her. And our government that decided to make the change didn't send adequate information to her about the change.
I think you see where this is going now. Because she didn't know that the vast majority of her bills would be arriving on Digipost a lot of the bills went unpaid. Then the late fees started adding up, and then the whole snowball effect started. The bill collecting company never did call her, they simply kept sending messages through Digipost which she was none the wiser about.
Now, this isn't like that none of her bills weren't paid. A lot of them went directly to her net bank which she then would pay and move on. So that is why the alarm didn't go off until we received a letter in the mail explaining that they (the debt collection company) are considering taking her house(s) (my brother lives in my old grandfather's house with his family and I and her share this house)
Also during this year, the cost of living in Norway increased dramatically, and her living off her pension and welfare checks is struggling to keep up, the budget keeps getting tighter and tighter.
And to top it off, our government has decided to cut some benefits that she had received after my father passed away about a decade ago.
So as you can tell, there are a lot of things hanging by threads at the moment. I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider donating. Even a tiny amount would help her out immensely.
