The 500 Greatest Video Games of All Time - F Zero
0The Mode7 engine changed so much for home computer/console racing games, and this launch title has inspired a long-running series and many other racers that followed. F-Zero takes place in the mid 2500s where a new league in hovershuttle racing has been created to rival formula 1.
The gameplay is great, and still sorta holds up - it's fast, furious and thoroughly addictive. You race in courses that will quickly have you adapt or fail, against other racers and courses filled with orange NPC vehicles that will knock your craft around less like a dodgem and more like a pinball. Effectively finishing courses demands precision braking and banking with the shoulder buttons, and you will either finish within the top 3 or be ranked out. There's also the possibility that with enough damage, your craft unceremoniously explodes with a loud crash. As this was a one-stream-and-done play, I only entered one of three cups - and played 5 challenging courses.
Mode7 manipulates the backgrounds to give a 3d effect, and the use in F Zero has blatantly inspired areas in Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings and Final Fantasy VI. Graphically, this looked like the equivalent of coin op games at the time. The chiptunes are head nodders, and really really enjoyable. I really had fun playing this.
