The Batman" is a 2022 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. It was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie serves as a reboot of the Batman film franchise. Directed by Matt Reeves, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, along with Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. The story revolves around Batman's two-year-long fight against crime in Gotham City, as he uncovers corruption while pursuing the Riddler (played by Paul Dano), a serial killer targeting Gotham's corrupt elite.
Plot:
On Halloween, Gotham City mayor Don Mitchell Jr. is murdered by the Riddler, a masked serial killer. Reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne, operating as the vigilante Batman for two years, investigates the murder alongside the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD). Lieutenant James Gordon discovers a message left by the Riddler for Batman. The following night, the Riddler kills Commissioner Pete Savage and leaves another message for Batman.
Batman and Gordon find that the Riddler left a thumb drive in Mitchell's car containing incriminating images of Mitchell with a woman, Annika Kosolov, at the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub operated by Oswald "The Penguin" Cobblepot, who serves as the lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone. While the Penguin denies involvement, Batman notices that Selina Kyle, Annika's roommate, works as a waitress at the club. As Annika goes missing, Batman sends Selina to the Iceberg Lounge to seek answers. She discovers that Savage was on Falcone's payroll, as is district attorney Gil Colson.
The Riddler abducts Colson, strapping a timed collar bomb to his neck and sending him to interrupt Mitchell's funeral. When Batman arrives, the Riddler calls him via Colson's phone and challenges him with three riddles. Colson refuses to answer the third riddle, which concerns the informant who gave the GCPD information leading to a historic drug bust that ended gangster Salvatore Maroni's operation. Colson is killed, and Batman and Gordon suspect that the Penguin may be the informant. They track him to a drug deal, only to discover that Maroni's operation has been transferred to Falcone, with corrupt GCPD officers involved. Selina inadvertently exposes them, and after a car chase, Batman captures the Penguin. However, they learn that he is not the informant.
Batman and Gordon follow the Riddler's trail to the ruins of an orphanage funded by Bruce's murdered parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. They discover that the Riddler bears a grudge against the Wayne family. Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce's butler and caretaker, is hospitalized after opening a letter bomb addressed to Bruce. The Riddler leaks evidence suggesting that Thomas hired Falcone to kill a journalist who was investigating Martha's family history of mental illness. Bruce confronts Alfred, who insists that Thomas only asked Falcone to threaten the journalist into silence and planned to turn them over to the police once he learned of the journalist's murder. Alfred believes Falcone had Thomas and Martha killed to silence them.
Selina reveals to Batman that Falcone is her father. After learning that Falcone killed Annika for discovering he was the informant, she attempts to kill him, but Batman and Gordon intervene. While Gordon arrests Falcone, the Riddler kills Falcone with a sniper rifle moments later. The Riddler is revealed to be forensic accountant Edward Nashton, who is incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. He tells Batman that he was inspired by him while targeting the corrupt. Batman learns that Nashton has planted car bombs around Gotham and has cultivated an online following planning to assassinate mayor-elect Bella Reál.
