The BEST (Not Scary) Halloween Games!
Maybe you're like us and Halloween is one of your favourite holidays? You like the creepy atmosphere and fun, but don't have the stomach for hardcore horror movies and video games. Well, worry not fellow coward, in this video we show off some of our favourite halloween themed games that scratch that spooky itch without making you lose any sleep!
And if you're a big strong alpha who doesn't afraid of anything, don't worry! These games can be enjoyed by anyone.
So sit back, grab some of your favourite candy, and get ready to be SLIGHTLY UNSETTLED. Your bones may not be chilled, but they will be moderately cool.
Perhaps no series carries the torch of haunted aesthetics better than the OG of horror gaming royalty, Castlevania. The series’ legacy might be even more complicated than the Belmont’s it often stars, but the highs of this series are still some of my favourite gaming experiences.
The list of must plays in the series are overwhelming,- to this day Symphony of the Night stands as one of the best video games you’ll play. A series known for Tight controls, a beautiful art style, aggravating but rewarding challenges, and a soundtrack that can melt your brain, it’s clear just how much Castlevania has inspired the gaming landscape even today. It even has its own genre! While it may be difficult to narrow the series down to one game, Today we are playing Super Castlevania IV, for the SNES.
Next we jump into Cuphead! This one might have you scratching your head, but the classic cartoon visuals draw from some of the most influential halloween media ever created when Studio MDHR created the stage "Railroad Wrath" starring The Phantom Express, along with some of it's ghostly and ghoulish riders.
After that, we he play a few rounds of the beloved (oc)cult series Darkstalkers! Darkstalkers had a super weird development, starting as an arcade fighter meant to feature Universal's classic monster icons, unfortunately they weren’t able to solidify the rights.
Thankfully for us, it resulted in them creating their own versions of the classic horror tropes- Ya got ya vampires, Frankenstein’s *monster*, werewolves, punk rock zombies, strangely attractive fish men. But none quite have the popularity of the succubus Morrigan, hard to imagine why.
What really sets this game apart from other arcade fighters though, was its animations. SO MANY SPRITES were hand Dawn for the most exaggerated and over the top action, because despite its dark and sometimes mature theming, it’s other biggest inspiration aside from horror was the looney toons. - and it’s cartoony slaptstick, and it’s never ashamed to show that.
With horror games becoming more popular than ever, our specific brand of mild macabre creeps are a dying breed, which is why we were so excited to try out 2020’s Pumpkin Jack by solo developer Nicolas Meyssonnier.
Taking inspiration from classic 3D adventure/platformers like MediEvil, Jak and Daxter and Spyro. Pumpkin Jack manages to feel familiar without coming across as stale or dated, and manages to infuse a ton of charm into the visual style and even the sound effects.
Thanks for tuning in, hope we inspired you to try some of the games on the list - let us know what Halloween games are a tradition for you?
