Garth Ennis may not have invented the metacommentary on the superhero genre, but he has certainly put his recognizable Garth Ennis stamp on the genre with his trademark cynicism and biting wit. Taking on icons from both DC Comics and Marvel Comics, The Boys is a brutal takedown of what could happen when you have superpowered beings in the world. In short, they’d be unaccountable and across the board awful. Naturally, they would also be exploited by the real superpowers of influence and corporate greed at the cost of pretty much anyone who ends up in their orbit. That’s what happens to Wee Hughie in the event that kicks off the story of The Boys on both print and screen. The death of Hughie’s girlfriend via A-Train smashing through her sets the stage for how gruesome and brutal the series will be. While the live action adaptation on Amazon has been in equal measures violent, grim, and grotesque, it has nothing on the comic book that doesn’t have to pass through any kind of standards and practices. As a result, no matter how brutal and reprehensible both pro- and antagonists are in the series, there’s a new level of deep darkness available in the pages of the comic book. Some characters might yet achieve their full darkness over the course of the series while others have avoided some of the not-even-on-streaming acts of depravity and brutality. What part of the comics do you think could never make it to the series? Let us know in the comments and be sure to like and subscribe for the latest videos straight to your inbox.
